Capsule hotels review - Kyoto and Osaka

Capsule hotel is a no no for people over 2 meters and for claustrophobic. The price is about quarter of a business hotel per person but you get what you pay, it is like a modern coffin with a flat small tv. I tried two capsule places, one is Capsule Ryokan Kyoto and Capsule Hotel Asahi Plaza Shinsaibashi in Osaka downtown. With these capsule hotels, you can choose any capsule that is empty.

Capsule Ryokan Kyoto is a great affordable place that is fairly new and only 7 minutes walk from Kyoto Station. The concept is to combine modern ryokan feeling with capsule theme. They have English speaking staff, amenities (For extra fee), storage space a lounge and small kitchen that you can use. You can choose to stay in a capsule dorm (mix) or to stay in a small ryokan room for two people. So for singles or couple who are on the budget, I think it is great base for Kyoto.

Get a feel of the size? It is smaller than the one in Osaka
Capsule Hotel Asahi Plaza Shinsaibashi

This one is much older than the Capsule Ryokan Kyoto, however it still has high tech feature (even more high  tech) inside the capsule as it not only has tv, but has alarm, automatic dimming light system. But the staff does not speak much English, and you have to be barefoot inside the premise once you pass the entrance gate. It is definitely bigger than Capsule Ryokan Kyoto in terms of the area and the capsule size. It has its own canteen (cheap food) and shared onsen. The capsules are divided into man and woman, so if you want piece of mind, this is the place. It is a good price as it has a bath but I would not make it a base if you are staying in Osaka. Perhaps one night would be enough.

The door is quite dodgy and you can't make noise as it's not soundproof
